Where to Plant
Pick a sunny spot in your yard – at least 6 hours of full sun.
When to Plant
Wait until the soil warms to 60°F. Use a meat thermometer to check temperature.
How to Plant
Create a hole about 4-6 inches deep and wide enough for your tuber. Lay the tuber horizontally with the eye (little nub) facing up. Gently cover with 2-3 inches of soil. Leave at least 12 inches between tubers, if not more, to allow for plant growth. Do not add water to tubers when planting. To much moisture can rot the tuber.
When to Water
Once growing, water deeply 2-3 times a week. Dahlias can be watered by hand. If installing soaker hoses or irrigation, do so when plants are young.
Support the Stalks
Once the stalk has multiple leaves, add a stake next to the stalk so it can be secured when its growing.
Pinching
When the plant is about 12 inches tall, pinch out the center growth to encourage more blooms.
Dis-Budding
To grow longer stalks, remove the two smaller side buds.
Fertilizing
Use a low-nitrogen fertilizer every 3-4 weeks. Think bloom food, not leaf food.
Snip and Share
Cut blooms in the morning or evening when it’s cool. Make a diagonal cut and place them in fresh water immediately.
